???Gambling Wizards??™: Conversations with the World??™s Greatest Gamblers??™ By Richard Munchkin.
The book starts off by explaining how he made his way through college by playing backgammon for money. The book proceeds in describing his experience throughout his betting life, it includes a blackjack dealer, a Vegas pit boss and also a TV producer. One of his most well-known accomplishments is Gambling Wizards .
Along with Munchkin??™s intuitive betting advice, his book also includes conversations with the one-time resident backgammon player at the Playboy Mansion, a consecutive WSOP champion and also an exclusive interview with a worldly renowned race bettor! Apart from this book offering better insight into the betting world it also presents invigorating candid conversations that are both educations and entertaining.
???The Man with the $100,000 Breasts: and Other Gambling Stories??™ by Michael Konik.
This book aims to offer the reader a glimpse into the truly unique world of betting. Konik perfectly chronicles the high roller, the debased gamblers and the sports betting hustlers in between.
From cover to cover this book is riddled with unbelievable stories of various high profile bettors and most importantly the paths they chose to get there. The author highlights betting tips for any level bettor and provides the reader with that competitive edge you??™ve been looking for all along.
If you are looking to add a book to your sports library, which will surely be welcome when it comes to turning in a profit, this book is for you!
???Fixed-Odds Sports Betting??™ by Joseph Buchdahl.
Adopting a more formal tone, this book is not a light read. Take your time, and ingest everything that it has to offer. This book is intended for the more disciplined bettor and a staple for a sports betting enthusiast. Do not bother with this book if you are not an avid bettor, here you will get into the nitty-gritty of the subject.
Joseph Buchdal covers the concepts needed to build your sports betting foundation. He goes to extensive lengths to give you all the detail needed explaining a guide to staking, bankroll-building tips amongst other topics which you most probably won??™t find anywhere else.
If your intent is to meticulously review your betting system whilst also maximising the power of your bankroll than a copy of Buchdal??™s book is an easy decision. Find value in just about any sports market and implement the author??™s tips in your daily bets.
This book also gives insight on prediction and how to go about it, so be sure to check it out!
???Lay the Favourite??™ by Beth Raymer.
Beth Raymer wrote this book after spending 4 consecutive years as pay and collect agent for a bookie.
This book is considered more of a memoir and through it, you will get a clear insight into the sports betting world which may come across to some people more like an abyss. If you are looking for a book dedicated to the more darker side of the sports betting industry than this book is just for you.
An interesting note, this book is the only book on this list that was later made into a film.
???Mathletics??™ by Wayne L. Winston.
Wayne L. Winston is a business professor by trade. He is an MIT ??“ educated operations research specialist who also happens to be the producer of one of the most unparalleled sports betting texts yet to be written.
In his book, ???Mathletics??™, Winston provides the reader with a delightful yet educational read. As the title of the book suggests, the author applies mathematics into the betting game in order to increase your chances of winning. L. Winston wrote this book in a manner that can be understood by all, so don??™t worry about not understanding because everything is explained thoroughly.
He reviews various sports such as baseball, basketball, football to explain maths concepts. Whether you happen to be a novice at betting or you??™ve been betting for the past decade you will surely be grateful for Winston??™s statistics and probability details.
The author also moves on to debunk various long-standing sports betting beliefs and the truth to debunk them all.
???The Signal & the Noise??™ by Nate Silver.
This books goes over and beyond betting. Nate Silver in his book writes his own history as the writer behind the popular blog ???FiveThirtyEight??™
???The Signal & the Noise??™ turns its attention on predictions but what??™s different is that Silver backs up his explanations with actual real-life examples. This book is a recommended tool in your sports betting education.
This text is a smooth transition into concepts relating to probability and risk. He explains why it is so challenging to predict the outcomes of our bets. This should also be your go-to book for a thorough education about predictions in sports betting.
???Sharp Sports Betting??™ by Stanford Wong.
Amongst bettors and bookmakers, this book is regarded as a classic. This is unarguably a must-read for any bettor who is honestly willing to invest. This book is the sports betting bible, and upon reading it you will soon find out why.
It is long, and for some that may be disheartening but give it a chance. If you are familiar with the basics then you can skim past the first few chapters and get into the heavier stuff. This book covers everything there needs to be on sports betting.
??? Conquering Risk: Attacking Vegas and Wall Street' by Elihu Feustel and George Howard.
This book has changed the game and the way we view sports betting. This is due to the successful strategies in the industry when it comes to conquering risk.
George Howard is a psychology professor and Elihu Feustel is a professional bettor and gambler hence you can expect that you are getting a detailed book written both from a psychological perspective and having them backed up by someone who is actually making a profit in betting.
This book might not be the best choice for beginners so we suggest starting with a different book if you are just starting out.
???Mathematics in Games, Sports and Gambling' by Ronald J. Gould Review.
Similar to our previous mention regarding mathematics, this book applies theory to increase profits in games and sports. This book will reveal a lot about calculating statistics and probabilities of betting.
The writer claims that readers will only need to know the basics of algebra to understand the book. Some of the topics covered in the book are counting, distributions, discrete mathematics, data analysis, averages, combinatorics, bonuses, probability and others.
Ronald J. Gould writes in a very easy and flowing manner so understanding the book should not that much of a challenge. The writer uses examples from real-life situations in sports.
Final Words.
If you??™re searching for a strategy, clearer betting insights or understanding the sports betting markets better, than these books on betting are sure to guide you through.
Grab a book and take a break, invest some time into research and you will reap the benefits quickly because you will start betting in a much smarter manner. These books offer advice unlike no other and they are backed up by the author??™s reputations.
Undoubtedly there are several other books you could read about sports betting but one thing we??™re sure of is that this list will most definitely give you that boost you might have been looking for all along.

She was the lone woman in the eye of a predatory hurricane that blew across continents and devastated countless lives. That she survived is testament to her brains and bravery. ?»?The Week In Sports Betting News: VA Sportsbooks Continue Piecemeal Rollout.
Happy Monday , everyone. There was plenty of interesting sports betting news last week despite GameStop and retail stock market investors dominating headlines.
The latest LSR Podcast discussed the two recent US sports betting launches in Michigan and Virginia . The team also discussed the recent trend of buying daily fantasy sports companies.
Make sure you??™re following @LSPReport on Twitter as well for breaking news updates.
Top sports betting story: Virginia sports betting continues slow rollout.
Sports betting in Virginia launched Jan. 21, but there still are just four operators live.
BetMGM and BetRivers joined FanDuel Sportsbook and DraftKings Sportsbook in the market last week. BetMGM received an untethered mobile license while BetRivers launched under Rush Street ??™s eventual casino license.
It would appear William Hill is next in line, with Caesars Virginia receiving its permit Wednesday. After that, who knows when we??™ll get the next bit of sports betting news from the state: The Virginia Lottery is keeping the process very secretive with licensee information only available as its website updates.
Tennessee gets two more sportsbooks as well.
It??™s go time for William Hill and WynnBET in the hot Tennessee sports betting market ??“ but not until after the Super Bowl .
Both operators received approval at Friday??™s Tennessee Education Lottery special meeting but have more to do before they can launch. Tennessee is also still waiting for Churchill Downs ??? TwinSpire to join the market.
The four launched sportsbooks ??“ Action 24/7 , BetMGM, DraftKings and FanDuel ??“ are likely thrilled to be the only operators so far. Tennessee??™s online-only market set a launch record with $131.4 million in handle in November followed by $180.9 million in December .
Those two months combined for $27.1 million in operator revenue.
Northeast states staying busy on sports betting.
Maybe there??™s something more to the water in the Northeast than just making perfect bagels and rolls.
Connecticut and Massachusetts are both trying to legalize sports betting while New York is taking a step forward and back simultaneously.
Sports betting in Connecticut is a bit tricky because of the gaming exclusivity granted long ago to the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes. All sides called for compromise at a hearing last Tuesday, but no one seems ready to make a sacrifice first.
Massachusetts sports betting is again supported by Sen. Brendan Crighton , who reconfigured his 2020 bill with higher upfront fees that would generate tens of millions for the state.
And then there??™s New York. Sports betting in New York is already legal, but only through retail casinos. For questionable reasons, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and his team think the best option is to limit the market to potentially just one mobile operator.
Nevada sports betting handle falls in 2020.
Fewer people traveling and an upended sports calendar because of the coronavirus handed Nevada ???s sportsbooks a 20% dip in annual revenue and 19% decrease for handle.
Revenue for the full year was $262.8 million , about $7 million behind the leader, Pennsylvania . Handle was $4.3 billion.
Part of the decline can be blamed on Nevada??™s market since it requires in-person registration for mobile wagering accounts.
Investor Ader talks gaming SPACS.
Jason Ader called FanDuel and PokerStars parent company Flutter the potential Tesla of the gaming industry, and detailed some of his potential SPAC targets in an LSR Q+A .
Ader, who had two SPACs more than a decade ago and recently raised $275 million through Capital 26 , is currently considering four targets.
Ader also touched on why he thinks MGM Resorts will eventually buy its BetMGM partner, Entain , and likened some current SPAC management teams to old Fords instead of Ferraris or Rolls Royces .
Elsewhere, LSR??™s Brad Allen also dove into how mergers and acquisitions could change the shape of US sports betting this year.

Big game, big worries? Gambling addiction grows with Illinois??™ booming sports betting industry ??” ???It??™s in your face all the time??™
The number of Illinoisans seeking help for problem gambling has almost doubled since legislators approved a massive gambling expansion in 2019. Experts expect that number to keep growing.

A man who requested that he only be identified as Anthony stands by a window in a high-rise condo near Soldier Field on Friday. The Tinley Park man is a recovering sports gambling addict. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times.
Thousands of football fans will be placing their first legal Super Bowl bets in Illinois this weekend, and for most, a little action will make the big game just a bit more entertaining.
But, for some, it might open the door to regular betting, adding a quick dopamine hit to the regular season viewing experience. Maybe they??™ll have to start budgeting for a new habit. Maybe they??™ll have to start borrowing for it.
And, for a select few, it will get worse.
It??™s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that??™s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas.
The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. Economic uncertainty and the general malaise of the quarantine lifestyle make gambling all the more enticing.
???It used to be that there was a stigma, and gambling was taboo. It was seedy,??? said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. ???Now, you can do it on your phone. The companies that are doing it are publicly traded Fortune 500 companies.???
A man who asked that he only be identified as Anthony reads news about the Super Bowl on his phone Friday. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times.
Calls to the state??™s gambling disorder hotline more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, when 13,258 people reached out either there or online for information on a problem that experts say is out of sight but front of mind for a growing number of bettors and their families. The Illinois Department of Human Services, which aims to connect problem gamblers with counseling resources, calls that a ???dramatic increase.???
In 2019, about 580 people received treatment for gambling disorders through state-sponsored programs across Illinois. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn??™t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment.
Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion ??” but more addiction is sure to follow.
State??™s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out.
Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000.
Many of those gamblers cite their temptations as coming from the state??™s 10 casinos, three horse racing tracks and 7,233 bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls that also house slot machines.
But since mobile sports betting launched last summer, Illinoisans can now gamble 24/7 from the comfort of home ??” and they??™ve already lost more than $101 million doing so, according to Gaming Board revenue figures.

As the billion-dollar industry keeps growing, addiction counselors say they??™re hearing more and more from young people glued to the sports betting apps whose ads saturate Illinois airwaves and billboards.
???It??™s in your face all the time,??? said Dr. Teresa Garate of the Gateway Foundation, a network of 16 addiction treatment centers statewide. ???It??™s becoming a part of everyday life. Everyone accepts it, but it??™s a serious trigger for some.???
That??™s the case for Anthony, a 36-year-old recovering problem gambler from southwest suburban Tinley Park, who said he often finds himself changing the station as sports talk radio hosts dissect the latest betting lines.
???It??™ll just be too much, it??™s too close,??? Anthony said. ???Even though I don??™t think it??™ll lead me down there, I know better than to let my mind start thinking like that.???
Anthony reads his favorite passages from ???A Day at a Time??™ a book by Gamblers Anonymous. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times.
Elizabeth Thielen, a senior director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, said she??™s seen yearly increases of people seeking help for gambling disorders across Chicago??™s north suburbs, but a ???real burst??? of clients has sought them out in the past nine months.
???The ages we??™re seeing are trending younger, and I think that??™s directly related to sports betting,??? Thielen said. ???At the same time, I feel hopeful because you have young people showing a surprising level of insight to find help.???
Way Back Inn executive director Anita Pindiur is pictured outside the Maywood facility in 2019. Sun-Times file.
While there??™s been an influx of new problem gamblers, the potential for relapse is an equal concern for Dr. Anita Pindiur, executive director of the Way Back Inn, a Maywood treatment center. About 10 former patients have already returned to the Way Back Inn for counseling this football season alone.
???Sometimes, we forget how quickly it can happen,??? Pindiur said. ???These things are advertised in a way that they??™re fun and entertaining, and they should be. But often there is no set of limits or recognition of the limits until we get our credit-card bill, or somebody points it out.???
Illinois sports betting market could rival Nevada??™s, analysts say.
Sports bettors have already wagered $1.4 billion since legal industry launched in Illinois.
COVID-19 puts new Illinois casino licenses on hold.
Besides financial ruin, experts say people who suffer from gambling addiction are more likely to suffer from substance abuse issues, turn to crime or even attempt suicide.
???I was losing everything,??? said Patrick, a 35-year-old Niles man who??™s 13 months removed from his last bet. ???I??™d have a paycheck on a Friday afternoon and it would be gone by Friday night. My relationships with my family and whoever I was dating, it just got out of control. I was lying, I was stealing, I was doing all these crazy things.???
As sports betting has been brought out of the shadows into everyday life, counselors say their challenge now is removing the stigma around seeking treatment for addiction ??” and they say they??™re making progress through increased awareness. That??™s been boosted with the help of $7 million set aside in the state??™s gambling expansion law in grants for treatment centers, which have used a lot of that money to bolster advertising.
The Way Back Inn is one of only a handful of addiction treatment centers in Illinois that provide a gambling-specific program. Sun-Times file.
???One of the biggest barriers to treatment is stigma, especially for gambling,??? said Garate, from the Gateway Foundation. ???People don??™t see it as a real addiction. It is, and help is out there.???
Just how many people need help is unclear. Experts generally estimate that between 2% and 5% of the population deal with gambling disorder, which would project to about 635,000 people across Illinois, including about 136,000 in Chicago.
TO GET HELP.
For more information on problem gambling support, call 1-800-GAMBLER or text ???ILGAMB??? to 53342.
But there??™s been no comprehensive study of the problem in Illinois since 1999, well before video slots dotted the walls at thousands of establishments across the state and sportsbooks were accessible anywhere that had a cellphone signal.
???You have to believe those numbers are different now,??? Thielen said.
The state Department of Human Services is out to find out just how much they??™ve shifted with the onslaught of gambling options. The agency launched a $500,000 study last fall surveying treatment providers, problem gamblers and others to gauge the prevalence of addiction, especially among populations considered vulnerable or marginalized due to race, culture, economic or social disparity.
???We want to know what??™s the challenge, and what should we look for,??? said David Jones, who directs the department??™s Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Division. ???Then, you can start to bring more evidence-based solutions on a size consistent with the scale of the challenge.???

Online sports betting to launch in Michigan this month.
LANSING, Mich. ??” Online sports betting is set to launch throughout Michigan in mid-January.
So far, fifteen sportsbooks have been approved for launch. Two, Fanduel and DraftKings, are already offering pre-registration deals for Michiganders who sign up before actual betting can begin.
As he tells Fox 47, the launch of legal sports gambling means more opportunities to wager.
???For a Michigander that probably means you are going to have more access to legal sports betting with the launch of mobile sports betting,??? said John Holden, an assistant professor of business at Oklahoma State University who studies federal and state regulation of sports gambling.
Mobile sports gambling can be done right from a bettor??™s phone through sportsbook applications that follow location and age verification protocol as defined by the state??™s Gaming and Control Board.
Holden says casinos that introduce their own sportsbooks to the digital landscape could see more engagement as programs begin to launch.
???For the past few months, sports betting has been available in some casinos though, of course, access to those casinos has been limited over the past few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic,??? Holden explained.
State-governed casinos are being hit hard by COVID-19 closures and reduced capacity measures. Table game and slots revenue dropped by over sixty-one percent compared to November 2019.
???I think there??™s some pent-up demand," said Richard Kalm, executive director of the Michigan Gaming and Control Board. "The casinos were only open at fifteen percent capacity in October, and November was only half a month because, remember, we had to close because of COVID."
Michigan is the twentieth state to legalize online sports betting. Other states have seen online sports take over the gambling scene in 2020.
???What we have seen is that states that have both brick and mortar sports betting and mobile betting are seeing upwards of 80 percent, 85 percent, New Jersey at one point was at 93 percent of the revenue was coming from mobile betting,??? Holden said.
According to Kalm, the process is now in the hands of casinos and sportsbook applications to make sure they??™re able to launch. To be cleared, these entities must be compliant with safe gambling guidelines laid out by the state.
???At this point, we??™re waiting for the independent test labs that test the software and the types of games and also the geolocation to make sure that they have geolocation properly in place, their internal controls, and their age verification in place,??? Kalm said.
Kalm said he and the control board are keeping safe betting in mind throughout this process. But, as Holden warns, the risk may not be preventable.
???There??™s always risk associated with gambling. However, in a regulated environment like what??™s launching in Michigan soon, those risks can be controlled to some degree.???
FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek was the first tribal casino in Michigan to implement sports betting back in June. They are expected to embrace digital sports gambling but haven??™t released a launch timeline.
Soaring Eagle Casino near Mount Pleasant announced in November that they would be adding in-person sports betting, but have yet to comment on the possibility of going digital.
Online poker, slots and more casino classics also on their way to Michigan, Kalm said, possibly as soon as February.

Blackhawks analyst Eddie Olczyk placed Illinois first legal sports bet in March 2019. Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $1.4 billion since then ??” and lost $101 million. Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times.

Blackhawks analyst Eddie Olczyk placed Illinois first legal sports bet in March 2019. Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $1.4 billion since then ??” and lost $101 million. Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times.

Blackhawks analyst Eddie Olczyk placed Illinois first legal sports bet in March 2019. Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $1.4 billion since then ??” and lost $101 million. Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times.

Blackhawks analyst Eddie Olczyk placed Illinois first legal sports bet in March 2019. Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $1.4 billion since then ??” and lost $101 million. Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times.

???I think there??™s some pent-up demand,

How to read Super Bowl 55 Odds.
The Kansas City Chiefs wil meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 7, 2021.
The Chiefs opened as -3.5 betting favorites while the Buccaneers are 3.5 underdogs.
After early wagers came in, most operators are holding Kansas City -3 (-120).
If you were to wager on Kansas City -3, you would have to lay 5/6 odds (Bet $120 to win $100) instead of your normal 10/11 juice (Bet $110 to win $100).
The return on Tampa Bay would be even-money (1/1) and a $100 wager would return $100.
The total or over-under on Super Bowl 55 is hovering between 56 and 57 points.
How to read NFL Las Vegas Odds.
The point-spread was developed to provide a balance for both teams involved in a contest to entice bettors to potentially back the weaker team and receive points. The two squads in a game are listed with a title, either a favorite or an underdog. The favorite is usually the perceived better team in the game, as backing them means giving up several points.
Ex. Bet $110 to win $100 (10% juice) Ex. Bet $100 to win $90.91 (10% juice)
It's not uncommon to see other values posted other than -10. Examples seen on the NFL Vegas Odds pages could include -08 , -12 , -15 and -20 . The -10 price is the most common value in the industry while many books offer reduced 'juice odds' and that would fall into the -08 category.
The lower-juice sportsbooks are normally found outside of the state Nevada. If you are in a state where sports betting is legal, please check out our online sportsbook directory to find the best and most secure places to make NFL bets.
Another number that??™s posted on the NFL Las Vegas is the total or ???over/under??™ for the specific matchup. If the favorite is designated as the home team, then the total will be listed above and vice versa if the visitors are favorites.
All of the above numbers are listed next to the teams, and before each matchup is a Rotation number. The NFL Las Vegas Odds are listed in order of rotation and those numbers are generated and produced by the sportsbooks. Above each matchup and rotation is the Time of the game, which is subject to change. All game times are Eastern Standard Time.
NFL Open Line.
One of the best features on the NFL Vegas Odds is the Open Line. This numbers consists of the first betting line received from one of our Las Vegas or Global Sportsbooks. The opening line varies depending on the sportsbook but it provides a clear-cut rating that the oddsmakers use. If you??™re betting on the NFL or any other sport, it??™s a great idea to view the open line first.

How do I bet on the Super Bowl?
We know that you can bet on the Super Bowl and all of NFL Futures or bet on the NFL Draft at any time of the year, but what??™s the process? The future wager or the ???Odds to Win??? bet on the Super Bowl is correctly selecting a team to win an event that takes place at a later time. A bettor will have his wagered money tied up until there is an outcome and bettors will receive fixed odds when they place the wager. In the case of the Super Bowl, you??™re not a winner or loser until you see zeros on the clock in the final game.
Most sportsbooks offer different ways to read to Super Bowl Odds. In the fractional NFL Futures Odds format below, you simply take the odds and multiply by the amount wagered.
Ex. Green Bay (8/1) to win the Super Bowl.
The Packers are listed as an 8/1 betting choice to win the Super Bowl. If you wager $100 on Green Bay to win the NFC and they capture the championship, then you would win $800 (8 ?· 1 x 100). Your online betting account would then credit your account $900, which includes your win and stake ($100).
If you are in a state where online betting is legal, we encourage you to check out our sportsbook directory to find the most trustworthy and reputable sites and mobile apps to place your Super Bowl bets.

VI Consensus NFL Line.

He's also in the middle of a profitable run on ATS picks in Bucs games, going on a 24-14 run on those picks over the last few years. He's leaning toward the Under in this game, but you can find his ATS pick on the Super Bowl right now over at SportsLine.
Chiefs vs. Bucs player prop best bets from advanced computer model:
SportsLine's Projection Model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,900 on top-rated NFL picks since its inception five-plus years ago. It has also crushed its NFL prop picks this season, entering the 2021 Super Bowl on a strong 386-309 roll, returning a massive profit of almost $3,200 this season.
After simulating this year's Super Bowl matchup 10,000 times, the model has delivered its top 20 player prop picks for Chiefs vs. Buccaneers, taking strong positions on Tom Brady's passing yards, attempts and interceptions; Patrick Mahomes' passing yards, attempts and touchdowns; and plenty more. Check out all 20 player props picks over at SportsLine.
"The Maestro" Larry Hartsein has been on a roll with his NFL picks over at SportsLine, going 22-12-2 on his last 36 ATS picks heading into the Super Bowl. He's been even better in Chiefs games, where he's put together a 16-3 run on ATS picks. Now Hartstein has made his pick for Super Bowl MVP, and it's not Chiefs star Tyreek Hill despite his 269-yard, three-TD explosion in the first meeting between these teams. You can find that pick by heading over to SportsLine.
SportsLine's Prop Guide is now live! You can get trends, research and picks from the SportsLine model and experts before the big game on everything from the coin toss to the MVP and plenty in between, including player props, half and quarter odds, largest lead, first and last team to score, successful field goals, sacks, longest TD play and a lot more delivered straight to your inbox. Get all the information you need before you lock in your picks in SportsLine's Prop Guide.

VI Consensus NFL Line.

VI Consensus NFL Line.

?»?A record year for NJ sports betting; casinos, not so much.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ??” New Jersey took nearly $1 billion worth of sports bets in December, an encouraging finish to a year in which coronavirus closures and restrictions sent overall gambling revenue down nearly 17%.
Over $6 billion worth of bets were placed last year in New Jersey, which won a U.S. Supreme Court case in 2018 that cleared the way for the ongoing expansion of legalized sports betting in America.
Figures released Wednesday by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement show the state??™s nine casinos and three horse tracks that accept sports bets took in over $996 million worth of such wagers in December, the latest in a string of monthly records for U.S. sports betting.
Slot and table games revenue for the casinos, including internet betting, was $2.64 billion in 2020. When sports betting revenue is added, New Jersey saw more than $2.88 billion in revenue for the year.
That represented a decline of 16.9% in a year in which the casinos were closed for 3 1/2 months. Even when they were allowed to reopen in July, they had to restrict operations to 25% of capacity ??” limits that remain in place today.
???Significant revenue was lost in those early months and, throughout the second half of the year, the resurging public health crisis continued to impact business in Atlantic City,??? said James Plousis, chair of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission. ???Atlantic City??™s stakeholders have been working hard to build a strong foundation for recovery. As society begins to approach a return to normalcy, Atlantic City will be ready to restore its recent positive momentum.???
Only one casino, the Golden Nugget, took in more money in 2020 than it did in 2019. It won more than $415 million, an increase of nearly 10% over the previous year.
Harrah??™s had the biggest decline in 2020, down 46.8% to $166.3 million. Resorts was close behind, down 43.8% to $100.2 million. Caesars was down an identical 43.8% to $152.3 million.
Tropicana was down 33.8% to $231.5 million; Borgata, the last of the nine casinos to reopen last year, was down 27.6% to $577.3 million; Hard Rock was down 17% to $290.5 million, and Ocean was down 10.1% to $214.1 million.
Ocean CEO Terry Glebocki said 2020 was a challenging year.
???We??™re optimistic about the future as demonstrated by Ocean??™s 18% year-to-date growth in casino win during the year??™s eight operational months,??? she said. ???In a time when many businesses in the country are ramping down operating schedules, Ocean is actively reinvesting in its property by debuting new venues likes our new high-limit slot experience, The Cove.???
Under two different owners in 2020, Bally??™s won nearly $97 million, compared with $181.5 a year earlier.
New Jersey has led the nation for months in the amount of money bet on sports within its borders. With the NFL playoffs underway in the run-up to the Super Bowl, January 2021 is almost certain to eclipse the $1 billion mark for total amount of money wagered, known in the industry as ???handle.???
But that number is separate from, and much larger than, sports betting revenue, or the amount of money sports books keep after paying out winning bets and other expenses. New Jersey??™s casinos and horse tracks kept just under $400 million in sports betting revenue last year, an increase of over 33% from a year earlier.
And its dominance of the market appears to be in jeopardy: New York state announced last week it will legalize mobile sports betting this year, a move certain to cut into New Jersey??™s sports betting business. Industry experts say about 20% of New Jersey??™s sports bets are made by New Yorkers who cross the border to wager; that is money New Jersey soon will no longer be getting.
Internet gambling revenue more than doubled last year, going from $482 million in 2019 to $970 million in 2020, another bright spot for an industry still struggling to recover from the pandemic. Internet gambling had been on a roll for years in New Jersey, but increased even more this year as gamblers had no option but to bet on their phones or laptops from mid-March to early July, and even after they reopened, some felt more comfortable gambling from home.

It??™s time to make sports betting a sure thing.

Will this be the year state lawmakers finally legalize sports betting?
State Sen. Brendan Crighton believes the odds may have finally shifted in its favor.
The Lynn Democrat??™s updated version of his previous sports-betting proposal includes a higher tax rate and a significant increase in licensing fees that he said will generate needed revenue for Massachusetts even before a wager is placed.
He feels there??™s reason to believe the Senate will seriously consider passage this session, despite leadership??™s indifference over the past two years.
Senate members of the Committee on Economic Development and Emerging Technologies abstained in the last session from voting to advance a sports betting bill drafted by that panel, and Senate leaders likewise passed on a House-backed sports wagering proposal tacked on to a major economic development bill in July.
???Sports betting is alive and well in Massachusetts, but unfortunately we??™re letting money go down the drain to the black market and states that have legalized,??? Crighton said.
A jump-start is clearly what this proposal needs.
Even a full-court press via a letter signed by all five major Massachusetts professional sports teams, gaming companies and a powerful labor union last November couldn??™t persuade the Legislature to act.
Absent an agreement at the time on a tax rate or structure for wagers, that group estimated Massachusetts could pull in about $50 million a year from sports betting. Gov. Charlie Baker has previously estimated annual revenue of $35 million, while the House estimated revenue of about $20 million.
Sen. Eric Lesser, who last session co-chaired the committee that studied sports betting, plans to file his own bill in the coming weeks.
Legalized sports betting currently operates in the District of Columbia and 19 states, including New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
Crighton??™s latest bill would create an opportunity for the state??™s two casinos in Everett and Springfield, the slots parlor in Plainville, horse-racing license holders and mobile platforms like the Boston-based DraftKings to host in-person and online sports betting.
Should thoroughbred racing return to Massachusetts, tracks would also be eligible to join the industry, which would be regulated and overseen by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission.
Prospective license holders would need to pony up a $10 million licensing fee, up from a high of $1 million in Crighton??™s original bill; the tax rate also would increase to 15%, an increase over Crighton??™s originally proposed 12.5%.
Crighton??™s bill would allow betting on professional and college sports, but not on in-state collegiate teams.
Some other bills filed last session, including one by Gov. Baker, excluded college sports, but Baker recently told the State House News Service he??™d accept a framework that included betting on college sports because it??™s already happening in neighboring states.
House Speaker Ron Mariano, who blamed the Senate for the failure to legalize sports betting last year, has promised to bring up the issue early in the new legislative session.
Massachusetts can??™t continue to sit on the sidelines and watch neighboring states siphon wagering tax dollars that this state vitally needs in this COVID-created, revenue-challenged environment.
Without legislative action, you can bet those receipts will continue to flow into New Hampshire, New York and Rhode Island.
